Have you ever bitten into something only to hear something crack in your mouth? Similarly, have you ever lost just a piece of your tooth? Naturally, if this happens you may wonder about what your options are. For instance, you may have heard about dental crowns and fillings—which could both be viable options—but have you ever heard of inlays and onlays?

If the integrity of the tooth is compromised, or if your tooth is too decayed for a filling to fix, you may want to consider an inlay or onlay. Similarly, if the damage isn’t too severe for a crown, this treatment could be right for you. However, because inlays and onlays can be made from many materials, we recommend speaking to our dentist to determine which material could be best for you.

Still, what is the difference between an inlay and an onlay? In reality, the two are very similar. The main difference between the two is that an onlay extends over the cusps of your teeth while inlays extend to your cusps.

Like many crowns, inlays and onlays often require two appointments to be placed. During the first appointment, our team will take a mold of your mouth to make sure your restoration fits perfectly into your unique smile. Usually, our team will place a temporary restoration until your next appointment. During the second appointment, your restoration will be placed.
